What is compounding?

Compounding creates medications that are specific to your personal requirements. Your physician prescribes your medicines as usual. Our team then mixes these together in the precise strength and form that you require.

Compounded medications can be delivered in a wide variety of forms that best suit you, including:

  • Capsules and tablets
  • Oral solutions or suspension to drink
  • Effervescent powders that create a fizzy drink in water
  • Troches (discs or squares that dissolve under your tongue)
  • Lollipops (yes, really!)
  • Topical preparations such as creams, gels, lotions, etc.
  • Eye and ear drops
  • Nasal sprays
  • Suppositories
  • Sterile injections

Compounding; old idea, new skills

The concept is nothing new; in the early part of the 20th century, most pharmacists made up prescriptions themselves. With the rise of mass-produced drugs in the 1960s, pharmacies could dispense drugs in pre-manufactured dosages.

As a result, many pharmacists did not need to be trained in compounding, and the practice declined.

Now there is a growing movement back to compounding, and Clarks Pharmasave are pleased to be one of only a few compounding pharmacies in our part of Ontario.

Why choose compound prescriptions?

The pre-packaged, mass manufactured standard size dosages don’t suit all patients, and can result in overdosing. Equally, the form of a drug might be wrong for a patient, who might prefer a liquid to a pill, for example. Those with allergies to specific ingredients may not be able to access the best drug for their needs.

Compounding enables you to receive the exact dosage you require, in the format you require and even in a flavor you prefer! Ingredients that you are allergic to can be excluded too, including, preservatives, lactose, gluten or dyes.

We can even make vegetarian capsules from cellulose for those who prefer not to take a capsule made with gelatin.

Compounding can also help save resources, often reducing the amount of drug required over a period of time, and reducing the number of packets and packaging involved.

Call us to discuss your requirements, or ask your physician at your next appointment or drug review.
