Sterile compounding
Sterile compounding takes compounding to a higher level than most patients require.
Sterile and non-sterile compounding
Non-sterile compounding is perfectly safe for the majority of medications, to produce personalized medications that you can drink, swallow, apply to the skin, or insert. Most local compounding pharmacies offer this, and it is the usual practice in drug compounding in hospital pharmacies.
Sterile compounding ensures the quality and integrity of compounded medications and avoids contamination between products. Sterile compounding involves us working to strict hygiene and safety guidelines, and producing our compound medicines within a medically sterile environment. It also requires specific training and skills, including certification in aseptic techniques, which many local pharmacies are not qualified in.
Ask your physician about compounding prescriptions, and they will advise the right format for you. If sterile compounding is required, they will specify that on your prescription. At Clarks Pharmasave, we will then make your prescription up accordingly.
Strict testing procedures
Our sterile compounds undergo strict testing for:
- Potency
- Sterility
- Endotoxins
Our sterile compounding laboratory and procedures are inspected and certified annually by the International Standards Organization. We are one of the few pharmacies with the ISO 2015 Certification.
IV and opthalmic solutions
Sterile compounding also covers the production of personalised:
- Intravenous (IV) injections and solutions
- Preservative-free preparations
- Ophthalmic preparations
- Discontinued or unavailable medications
- Intrathecal pump medications for pain control
